As we live longer and take more responsibility for our emotional, mental, and physical health, it just seems natural that we want to be as youthful as we are healthy.
Here are some things to know and questions to ask yourself (and your naturopathic doctor) before getting started.
What is Botox?
Botox is derived from a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin that can be deadly. It comes from a bacteria known as Clostridium Botulinum, which in and of itself is mostly harmless. It is found in plants, fish, and shellfish. Botulinum toxin, if the cells undergo proliferation, can become botulism, which is why you may have heard or read misinformation about Botox being a weakened form of it.
How Does It Work?
Because Botox is a neurotoxin, albeit non-fatal, in very small doses, it does have a paralyzing effect that causes muscles to cease flexion, thereby temporarily relaxing and smoothing wrinkles.
Is It Safe for Me?
Generally speaking, yes, Botox is safe to use as an aesthetic, anti-aging treatment. However, there are side effects like pain, swelling, redness, and numbness at the injection site. More serious but less common side effects can be nausea, weakness, vision problems, drooping around the eyes, and gallbladder dysfunction. There aren’t any contraindications for use other than an allergy to Botulinum toxin. Of course, a discussion with your healthcare provider will help you further determine if this type of treatment is right for you. Your naturopathic doctor can discuss any potential side effects that may be due to other conditions, medications, or supplements.
