Comprehensive Laboratory Testing

At the heart of naturopathic care, laboratory testing plays a crucial role in helping us uncover the underlying root causes of illness. By assessing key biomarkers, metabolic patterns, and physiological imbalances, we gain a deeper understanding of each patient’s unique health picture. These insights guide us in designing personalized treatment plans, empowering our patients on their journey to wellness.

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

  • A CBC evaluates red blood cells (for anemia markers like hemoglobin and hematocrit),
white blood cells (immune markers like neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils, and basophils),
and platelets (important for blood clotting).

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)

The CMP checks multiple systems, including:

  • Blood sugar: glucose
  • Kidney function: BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and creatinine
  • Electrolytes: sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide, anion gap
  • Minerals: calcium and phosphorus
  • Proteins: albumin and globulin
  • Liver function: AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin

Other Functional Lab Tests

Your physician may also recommend additional testing, such as:

  • GGT (Gamma-glutamyl transferase): helps assess liver and gallbladder stress (including alcohol use, medications, or toxin exposure).
  • Uric Acid: a waste product of protein metabolism that helps assess risk for gout, kidney stress, and metabolic imbalance.
  • ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate): a general marker of inflammation used to help monitor chronic inflammatory conditions.
  • CRP (C-Reactive Protein): rises in response to non-specific inflammation or infection.
  • Cardiac CRP (hsCRP): a high-sensitivity marker more specific to cardiovascular inflammation.

Cardiometabolic Testing

Conventional Cholesterol (Lipid) Panel

  • Total Cholesterol: summary measure used for hormones and cell membranes.
  • Triglycerides: reflects how the body processes and stores excess sugar and calories.
  • HDL (“good” cholesterol): carries excess cholesterol away from the bloodstream.
  • LDL (“bad” cholesterol): carries cholesterol to tissues; high levels may indicate atherosclerosis risk.

Blood Sugar Tests

  • HbA1c: average blood sugar over the past 3 months.
  • Insulin: can be an early marker of insulin resistance.

Hormone & Thyroid Testing

Hormone Tests

  • FSH & LH: brain hormones that signal ovaries/testicles to produce sex hormones.
  • Estradiol & Estrone: forms of estrogen that support cycle regulation and bone health; offer insight into estrogen balance.
  • Progesterone: supports cycle regularity, pregnancy health, mood stability, and sleep; helps assess ovulation and estrogen/progesterone balance.
  • Testosterone: supports energy, muscle strength, libido, mood, and metabolic health in all genders.

Thyroid Tests

  • TSH: signals the thyroid how much thyroid hormone to produce.
  • T4 (Thyroxine): primary thyroid hormone used to assess thyroid output.
  • T3 (Triiodothyronine): active thyroid hormone affecting metabolism, energy, temperature, and mood.
  • Thyroid antibodies (TPO, TGA): testing for Hashimoto’s.

Stress & Adrenal Health

  • Cortisol: commonly called the “stress hormone,” helps regulate energy, blood sugar, and inflammation.
  • DHEA-S: a longer-term marker of adrenal output supporting resilience, immune function, and hormone balance.
