The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 13,000 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed last year, and more than 4,000 women died from the cancer. Cervical cancer develops when abnormal cells within the cervix grow out of control and form tumors. All women are at some risk for cervical cancer, but it mostly affects women over the age of 30.
The main risk factor for cervical dysplasia (abnormal cell growth) is the presence of HPV (human papillomavirus). However, other risk factors include:
- Unprotected Intercourse
- Smoking
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Long term oral contraceptive use ( more than five years)
- Compromised immune system
- Multiple sexual partners
Cervical cancer cases and deaths related to the disease have declined significantly with regular screening guidelines like pap smears and HPV testing. Regular screenings and follow-up care could have prevented most deaths from cervical cancer. Talk to your doctor today about your risk factors and screening guidelines to protect you from HPV and cervical cancer.
