Acupuncture
Today we are demonstrating acupuncture so that you can learn what the treatment looks like. Acupuncture is the procedure of using fine needles to increase circulation and lymphatic flow by placing them on specific acupoints on the body.
We have 12 major meridians in our body, and I like to think about the meridians as energetic highways. Each of these meridians corresponds to a specific organ in our body. For example, we have a stomach meridian, and along that meridian, we have actual acupuncture points for the stomach. So we can treat stomach conditions through that meridian and all the others.
Acupuncture also supports our body’s innate ability to heal itself. It is very effective in treating acute and chronic conditions, including chronic joint pain, such as back and neck pain, gastrointestinal complaints like bloating and constipation, infertility, migraines, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. It is one of Dr. Watkins’ favorite treatments for pain.
An acupuncture treatment starts with your naturopathic doctor sterilizing thin needles about the width of a strand of hair. Before starting, your practitioner will clean the treatment area with alcohol swabs.
Once clean, the needles are inserted into specific acupoints. The needles are left in for 25-35 minutes, depending on the case. Every 15 minutes, the needles will be stimulated. Your naturopathic doctor at Living Wellness will always ask if you feel any discomfort, pain, or sensations. Most patients commonly feel warmth or a mild tingling sensation in the area of the needles. This is entirely normal and a good sign that your Qi is moving. If you feel pain at any time, let your practitioner know so that your naturopathic doctor can adjust the treatment accordingly.
