How BOTOX® Cosmetic Works
BOTOX® is the brand name for Botulinum toxin type A, a natural therapeutic muscle-relaxing agent derived from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. Originally approved for the treatment of eye muscle spasms, it was quickly recognized for its cosmetic value.
Physicians have been using BOTOX® for years to correct the visible signs of stress and aging. The medication relaxes the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles that may make you look tired or angry.
The BOTOX® Procedure
The procedure only takes a few minutes and requires no anesthetic or downtime. Your naturopathic doctor will inject the muscles causing the lines and wrinkles with a very fine-tipped needle. Ice is applied to the area to be injected both pre- and post-procedure to minimize swelling and bruising. The procedure is only mildly uncomfortable and proven very safe and effective.
Results and Risks of BOTOX®
The side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic are rare and usually mild and temporary. The most common side effects are redness, mild bruising, and headaches. In rare cases, eyelid drooping and asymmetry may occur, but they are also temporary and can be corrected. Most patients begin to see their lines smoothing out within 24 hours, however, it can take up to 7 days to see the full effects. BOTOX® typically lasts between 3-5 months, with prolonged results after several treatments.
Other side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic include dry mouth, discomfort or pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, neck pain, and eye problems such as double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight, drooping eyelids, swelling of the eyelids, and dry eyes.
